Small spaces are cool, especially when they live big! Add a little european influence in the kitchen, a gracious bath, and comfortable bedroom…. and you create a kind of modern retreat, a sanctuary, a haven!

Essentially there are three zones; living, sleeping, and working. We gathered the bath and laundry areas, distinguishing them both in plan and elevation, to create a sort of “work center” for the house. The “hall” doubles as access to the bedroom and bath, and serves as host for laundry. A large window is placed above the laundry counter to capture a ton of natural light that radiates through to the bath via glass block relites.

Sleeping is important, so the bedroom is sized “just right” providing generous space to move about, with plenty of storage, and like everything we do the room steps right outside via a six foot wide sliding glass door. A long window rests above the bed wall. We relieved the closet wall by offering two closet spaces that flank a built-in drawer set with a large window above…. natural light coming from everywhere!

Ahhh…. the living space is where the whole design comes together. The room is huge, well, as huge as a small modern cottage could offer. The kitchen occupies the end wall and sits under a large window. Cooking is in the island, facing the living space and participating in the house beyond. Perhaps the most significant aspect of Haven is the twelve foot wide, three panel, sliding glass door with clerestory glass above. Twelve feet of glass! Imagine a wall that quite literally opens itself up to the outdoors beyond. It is proportionally perfect - wide creating the expanse, not to tall as to overwhelm, creating an incredible indoor/outdoor living experience.

Like everything we do at ideabox, materials are integrally important to the design of a house. With Have we had fun. Outside features a fiber cement lap siding that has integrally painted two-tone process creating a siding that has the look of real wood. It’s awesome. Paired with vertical corrugated galvalume siding and standing seam metal roof, Haven continues our goal of low maintenance, long life, resource efficient materials selected to reflect a dynamic blending of urban and agrarian influences.

Inside, Haven is equally fun blend a modern materials and easy maintenance. Counters are Cambria quartz, appliances are Whirlpool stainless, cabinets are grey shaker with soft close hardware. Flooring is plank, installed transverse, and runs through the entire house uninterrupted. Trim is bright white with shaker detail. Clean, warm, modern, and awesome!

In short - Haven is an awesome big living small footprint modern rock star! It just happens to be a house!
